Days 4 and 5 - Paris
According to my father if you spent 10 seconds looking at each piece of art in the Louvre, it would take approximately 15 years to see the entire collection. We had two days in Paris. Let's just say it wasn't time to see much; however, we did get to visit the Louvre for several hours, we spent a morning at Versailles, we saw Notre Dame, we took an evening stroll on a hillside overlooking the city, and we ate a delicious baguette and a few crepes.
Of course, you can't go to Paris without seeing the Eiffel Tower, but our stop there was quick, because we feel it is a bit overrated. The Louvre was amazing and overwhelming. It was great to have my father there with us to provide the context and history of so many works of art--it is much more meaningful that way. We each had some favorite pieces. Jen is partial to the work of a French artist named Jacques-Louise David, and the pieces by Vermeer (You may know him as the artist portrayed in Girl with a Pearl Earring) were absolutely beautiful. The Mona Lisa, which I had never been partial to myself, was much more impressive in person, that is, if you didn't mind the horde of Japanese tour groups compacted around it.
Our hotel in Paris was an older hotel situated on the edge of the red light district. It wasn't the most romantic side of Paris, although our tour director assured us that the red light district's bark was worse than its bite (I think that sounds a little more kinky than he intended). Luckily, in addition to the red light district, our hotel was also situated a block from Montmatre, one of the largest hills in Paris, which really was a romantic place to take a walk and view the city's skyline.
At times Jen and I wondered whether Paris would be more aptly named the "City of Urine" than the "City of Lights," because it was entirely too common to be hit with an unexpected whiff of urine smell. However, in the end Paris was an amazing city to visit.

WHAT!?!! I had no idea that you guys were in Europe! I am SOOOOO jealous. You guys are some serious world travelers these days!
I think Verasailles would be the ultimate. I don't know why but I'm kind of obssessed with the French revolution and so I think that would be sooo neat! I want to go there someday. So anyways this weekend I think would be great to get together. Maybe Saturday? Call me.
we did have fun on our mini-trip! it proved to be quite a challenge on our patience travelling with the baby! we've never been to happy to be home! it is stinky that James and I haven't really celebrated our anniversary yet but we'll find time...sometime!
but we did check your mail - I promise!!! We gave Alec a bag full of mail...lots of junk though :( I didn't want to throw away anything - even those silly grocery ads from weeks ago!
we'll see you guys on Sunday. by the way, we're moving out of the ward at the end of the month. we're sad to not be the teachers anymore since the kids are now getting used to us. James is hilarious with Eric when they pretend tornados are attacking!!!
I've heard that Paris smells like urine before. It really ruined the thought of wanting to go there for me. But I have since gotten over that and I would really like to go again.
The gardens were amazing. I can't believe it is even more spectacular in real life. That is something I would like to see for sure.
And how awesome to visit the Louvre with your dad! It was probably like having your own personal tour guide. And Jen, Vermeer is one of my favorites as well. I also love the painting in the picture. We studied that one in my many art history classes as well. I can't wait to go to the Louvre!
what a blast! sounds and looks like so much fun!!! I am so glad you had the opportunity to go!!!
Jen, the reunion is both Friday and Saturday, I believe. In fact, Chris said she reserved the church for Thurs, Fri, and Sat in case of bad weather. So I think they are hoping people will be there Thursday as well. I'm not sure that we can be there then but hopefully Friday and Saturday.
